In Brazil, I have taught the class “The Life of Christ” for years and, more recently I taught it in Chad. Most of us have read the Gospels many times. Those of us who grew up in the church, have heard all our lives the Bible stories of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Daniel, Peter, Paul, and others. Some of us have had the opportunity to study in Bible Institutes and Seminaries or other some other form of more in depth training.
How much more is there to learn? Well, quite a bit. On this trip, I found myself thinking, “I never noticed that” or “I never looked at that way” or “Ohhh, now that makes sense.”
They say, “A pictures is worth a thousand words.” If that is so, being there is worth fifty thousand words. Actually seeing where Biblical events took place makes the Scriptures come alive as we are transported back to Bible times with our mind’s eye.
But a trip like this is not just about learning. It is about growing closer to God. Being immersed into the culture and land takes our thoughts and prayers to a new level. Many times, we stood in awe of God as we reflected on His works.
I will never see the Bible in the same way. The trip brought a richness to my walk with God that is incalculable. My teaching will be richer through what I have learned and experienced.
"Traveling to Biblical sites in Rome, Greece, and Israel was an awesome experience. Reading Scripture in the very spots about which the author is writing was almost unreal. My trip has influenced my devotions, academic study, and church ministry since I came back, and I continue to praise God for the way he uses that trip in my life."
“I still look back often at the pictures and notes from my Israel trip and wish I could go back. This trip felt like a once:-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the land of the Bible in a fresh way. I grew in my faith and in my understanding of God’s Word through my time spent in the Holy Land."
My wife, Sara, and I received a scholarship to visit Israel, Greece and Rome earlier this month. We were humbled and blessed to have been considered and invited. I have been either studying or teaching the Bible full time for 28 years and this was my first opportunity to visit the holy land. My wife and I teach and mentor missionary candidates for Ethnos360 (formerly known as New Tribes Mission). Many of our students will plant churches among unreached people groups around the world.
I want to share with you three things happened because of this trip.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible through your generous contributions to Walk the Bible. I pray we will be faithful stewards of the gift you gave us and will carry it for the rest of our lives and ministries.
During my 37 years of ministry as a missionary and director of an international mission agency, I had the privilege of seeing firsthand the impact of the Bible in dozens of countries and a multitude of ethnic groups. But something was lacking in my formal training and practical ministry experience – a personal encounter with the lands where God first called out his people, shaped his nation, sent his Son, and birthed his Church. Bob Fetterhoff and Walk the Bible Ministries provided that experience in ways that far exceeded our expectations. Our daily schedule was appropriately full (we didn’t go there to rest!), our accommodations were excellent (providing what we needed to maximize our time), and the education and spiritual experience was outstanding!
